Surgical error results in two amputated legs

Surgical errors can come with a range of consequences from insignificant discomfort to severe and life threatening infections. In one of the more horrific surgical errors, a woman lost both of her legs following a serious injury she incurred while under the knife. The sad turn of events for the Brooklyn area mother is a warning to patient's everywhere. Maryland patients might be interested in the following medical malpractice case.

The story began when the woman went into the hospital for a gynecological operation in 2009. While undergoing the surgery the attending surgeon committed a tragic surgical error. According to the lawsuit the surgeon punctured the woman's intestine. The wound resulted in serious complications including a massive infection and blood poisoning. The consequences of the mistake were beyond tragic.

Due to the infection caused by the surgical error the woman contracted gangrene in her lower legs. As a result of the gangrene the doctors were forced to amputate both of her legs. The woman later filed a medical malpractice lawsuit in the Brooklyn Supreme Court against the doctor and the Winthrop University Medical Center. The woman is seeking unspecified money damages.

Medical malpractice cases come in all shapes and sizes. The medical malpractice case above is an example of how serious some surgical errors and doctor's mistakes can become. It is because of cases such as these that it is so important for patients to come forward when something goes wrong. In addition to holding the responsible party liable for their mistakes it is also the only way for doctors to learn.
