An early diagnosis can be the difference between life and death

The best bet anyone has for success with a serious medical condition is an early diagnosis. From ovarian cancer to high-blood pressure, early diagnosis and treatment is often the number one difference between those who survive and those who do not. This is also why medical mistakes such as the misdiagnosis of cancer or other serious medical conditions are so serious. Maryland residents should know that ovarian cancer is particularly aggressive and needs to be caught early.

According to a recent article, more than 20,000 women will be diagnosed with ovarian concern and nearly 14,000 of those women will die. Ovarian cancer, which is a rare gynecologic malignancy that can affect women at any age is the most lethal gynecologic malignancy in the United States. And, like so many diseases, the best chance at patient survival is directly related to how early a medical professional can diagnose the condition.

Unfortunately for the victims of ovarian cancer the symptoms of the disease can be subtly, especially when the disease is in its early stage. Survivors of the cancer often describe the early symptoms as "whispers," with symptoms include bloating, abdominal pain and an increase in abdominal size. As the disease advances, however, additional symptoms become prevalent like the loss of appetite, constipation, shortness of breath and increased pain.

Determining whether the failure to diagnose a serious and life threatening medical condition, like ovarian cancer, and the resulting failure to treat the condition is the result of doctor error can be a complex legal inquiry. While there are certainly cases where an accurate and immediate diagnosis of a medical condition may be difficult, there are other cases where doctor error plays a major role. In these latter cases, patients and the family of patients may be entitled to damages.
