Failure to diagnose ailment may lead to serious injuries

Residents of Maryland know that doctors have to go through years of medical training in order to earn their degrees and obtain a license to practice medicine. Doctors are human beings though, and occasionally make mistakes which could lead to a catastrophic or fatal injury or illness. Thus, such failures to diagnose ailments or erroneous diagnosis of prevailing diseases have become the subject matter of various legal proceedings.

Improper monitoring may cause serious birth injuries

Delivering a baby may be a routine procedure for many doctors. However, it is important to note that proper, vigilant monitoring of the birthing process may be the most crucial step in protecting both the mother and the newborn infant. There have been various cases where the doctor's negligence during childbirth has led to serious birth injuries. In several cases, the birth injuries may have even led to fatalities or permanent disabilities.

Maryland lawyers dealing in surgical error lawsuits

Surgical errors, such as wrong-site surgery or any other mistakes made during an operation, may lead to grave patient injuries or life-long disabilities. Many Maryland residents have fallen victim to these kinds of surgical errors, and injured patients and their family members may initiate a lawsuit in order to receive compensation from the doctor or hospital responsible for the error.

Medical malpractice and compensation payouts

Many doctors and healthcare professionals have been sued for medical malpractice in the United States. The National Practitioner Data Bank, or NPDB, has made it mandatory for all medical practitioners to report any medical malpractice lawsuit payments that they have made. All such medical malpractice lawsuit payments have to be reported to the database within a period of 30 days from the date of payment. This does not always happen however, as many medical malpractice lawsuits result in settlements, which do not have to be reported. Likewise, lawsuits filed only against hospitals go unreported.

What are "never events?"

"Never events" are the kind of surgical errors made by doctors and other medical practitioners that are so patently wrong and obvious that they should never have happened in the ordinary course of medical practice. Such never events may include wrong-site surgery, treatment delay resulting in severe disabilities or even the patient falling in the hospital due to the fault of a medical practitioner, doctor or nurse.
