Birth injuries can cause Klumpke's Palsy

Parents across Maryland wait for the birth of the new baby eagerly for many months. Individuals begin to envision how their life will look once this baby is born. Maryland residents start to make plans for this child and their future together. However, plans and visions can be cut short by the carelessness of medical professionals during the baby's birth.

Birth injuries in Maryland are unfortunately not that uncommon. Nurses, doctors, midwives and other medical professionals make errors and have lapses in judgment that result in an injury to a child.

One such injury is Klumpke's palsy. Klumpke's palsy occurs when the lowest two of the brachioplexus nerves of a child are injured during birth. There are many ways that these nerves can be injured during the birthing process.

If the baby is too large for the birth canal, for example, then Klumpke's palsy can occur. Additionally, the nerves may be damaged if the baby descends in an unusual position during birth. Also, if the baby's shoulder gets stuck during the birthing process, Klumpke's palsy can result. Doctors can also cause Klumpke's palsy by pulling on the baby in the wrong way during the birth process.

This birth injury can result in a number of serious consequences for the infant. In some cases, Klumpke's palsy is only mild. It results in a loss of sensation in the child's limbs. However, in more severe situations, a child will be paralyzed and unable to move the child's wrists or hands.

In some cases, Klumpke's palsy can heal itself overtime. Often, with extensive physical therapy. However, there are other situations where the condition is permanent.

When a child suffers a birth injury, the family needs to understand their legal rights. If the injury was caused by negligence, the family may be entitled to compensation. An attorney can help individual families understand their legal rights when a child has unfortunately suffered from an injury at birth.
