Warning signs of a possible stroke

Doctors are responsible for diagnosing many serious medical conditions. Many of these conditions, if caught early, can be treated and cured. However, if certain conditions are misdiagnosed, ignored or overlooked, the patient can have serious and lifelong consequences. These consequences can include permanent impairment in some situations. A failure to diagnose can also be fatal in some cases.

One serious medical condition that needs immediate treatment is a stroke. According to the American Heart Association, a stroke occurs when a blood vessel in the brain is blocked by a clot or otherwise bursts. This results in brain tissue being deprived of oxygen. When this occurs, brain cells can die. A stroke is very serious. It is the leading cause of disability in the United States and the fifth leading cause of death.

Therefore, it is very important for people to recognize the signs of a stroke, particularly medical professionals. There are several signs that can indicate a stroke is occurring. One is trouble seeing from one or both eyes. Also, sudden difficulty walking, loss of coordination or balance, or dizziness can also signal a stroke. Facial, arm or leg numbness on one side of the body can also be a sign that a stroke is occurring.

In addition to these symptoms, sudden confusion can also be indicative of a stroke. If people have a difficult time speaking or understanding speech they may be experiencing this emergent medical problem. Finally, a severe headache with no known cause can also indicate a stroke.

It is important for people with these symptoms to immediately seek medical help. However, it is up to doctors to recognize what the symptoms indicate. If doctors fail to recognize the signs, it can be deadly for Maryland patients. Patients who have suffered because of a failure to diagnose a stroke may have legal rights.
