Medical malpractice complaint filed against Maryland cardiologist

Patients put their health and safety in the hands of their doctors. Often people do not fully understand their medical conditions or what procedures are needed and rely on their physicians. But what happens when a doctor does not provide the standard of care expected of medical professionals?

A heart surgery doctor was recently accused of medical malpractice. The surgeon works at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, and is on a committee tasked with preventing improper stenting. The surgeon is now being accused of this very malpractice in his own personal practice.

The complaints were filed with Maryland's state health claims arbitration office and alleged wrongful stenting of a patient on two different occasions. The doctor and his former partners have also been accused of overstating a disease in order to implant a stent.

This type of complaint could result in a revocation of the doctor's medical license. One of the doctor's former colleagues had been convicted of over-stenting and lost his license. That colleague allegedly implanted unnecessary stents in more than 350 patients.

The Maryland Health Care Commission was tasked with developing ideas for legislative changes that would provide oversight of coronary intervention labs across Maryland in an attempt to avoid these medical mistakes. Ironically the doctor being charged of over-stenting had been appointed to this advisory group that focuses on developing new law to stop over-stenting.

A special agent with the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services has stated that over-stenting is often motivated by greed. Patients should not be receiving stents if a stent is unnecessary.
