Hospital sued over wrongful death of doctor

Tragic medical mistakes and preventable acts of hospital negligence, such as the misdiagnosis of common and easily diagnosable medical conditions, happen far too often in the United States. While many of these events go unnoticed, sometimes they result in serious, even deadly outcomes. Maryland readers may find interesting the following case of a doctor who recently died after a fatal misdiagnosis.

It was recently reported that the parents of a young doctor filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against the hospital where the physician sought medical treatment days before her death. According to the complaint, the 26-year-old doctor sought treatment after experiencing a 10-day spell of headaches. The lawsuit says the woman was suffering from an easily diagnosable and treatable blood clot condition. The hospital, however, failed to detect the blood clot and the doctor eventually died from a cerebral hemorrhage.

The family claims the doctors treating the 26-year-old were negligent in their failure to diagnose the clot, one that should have been obvious. Throughout her time at the hospital, doctors apparently provided the victim with pain medication and conducted tests but did not order any head imaging. The lawsuit claims the death was entirely preventable and that the young woman would still be alive if the doctors employed the most basic principles used in the medical profession.

Losing a loved one is always difficult. When that loss is the result of a wholly preventable medical mistake the anguish is even greater. Fortunately, it is possible to hold the responsible party accountable for his or her mistakes. In a medical malpractice case involving hospital negligence, the family of the deceased might be eligible to recover damages. While the money won't bring back a loved one, it might help deter someone else from having to experience the same pain in the future.
