Report on VA medical malpractice shows millions in claims

Medical malpractice is far more common than most people realize. From big name university hospitals and for profit institutions, to small clinics and non-profits, medical malpractice and hospital negligence is a daily occurrence in the United States. In fact, Maryland readers may find it interesting to learn that the U.S. Veterans Health Administration (VA) alone has paid out hundreds of millions to settle wrongful death claims in medical malpractice cases in just the last thirteen years.

The news concerning VA medical malpractice and wrongful death claims comes from a report that was put out by the Center for Investigative Reporting. According to the report, the VA has paid more than $200 million to the families and estates of former patients who died while in its care since September 11, 2001. The number of veteran families that received financial payouts for wrongful death is estimated to exceed 1,000 nationally.

The reasons cited for the payouts are tragically common in health care settings. In many of the cases, the report mentioned such tragic events as the failure to diagnose serious medical conditions properly, improper or untimely treatment, elder care negligence and other failures in supervision. Another set of occurrences detailed in the report were deaths linked to soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan who were turned away by the VA for treatment despite suffering from serious mental health conditions.

Medical malpractice and medical negligence are serious issues that must be addressed right away. That is why when someone is seriously injured or loses a loved one in a healthcare setting it is vital that they consider speaking with an experienced medical malpractice attorney immediately. A medical malpractice attorney may not only be able to assess the quality of the patient's case but could also help provide some worthwhile guidance for a patient concerning the next steps to take at a stressful time.
