Medical malpractice and compensation payouts

Many doctors and healthcare professionals have been sued for medical malpractice in the United States. The National Practitioner Data Bank, or NPDB, has made it mandatory for all medical practitioners to report any medical malpractice lawsuit payments that they have made. All such medical malpractice lawsuit payments have to be reported to the database within a period of 30 days from the date of payment. This does not always happen however, as many medical malpractice lawsuits result in settlements, which do not have to be reported. Likewise, lawsuits filed only against hospitals go unreported.

The database may help potential patients in Maryland, as well as their families, to research the medical practitioner they choose to see for treatment. In many cases, the payments may be made after mediation or an out-of- court settlement. A majority of settlements, which do not pass through the courts, are not reported elsewhere. Thus the database is important for all potential patients as well as their families.

The database includes a list of all payments made by the medical practitioner in each case. The potential patients can observe the total medical negligence lawsuit payments as well as the individual payments made to each patient. The database can become a great research base for all potential patients and can even help in preventing many medical malpractice cases.

In most cases where the medical negligence is evident, the medical practitioner may choose to pay out their patients or their families rather than go through a court proceeding. Many patients as well as their families consult with attorney to help, even in cases of mediation or arbitration, in order to receive the best possible outcome.
