Can wristbands prevent surgical errors?

There are certain medical situations that Maryland residents would like to think never happen. People want to believe that surgeons always operate on the right patients and that they always perform the right procedures. However, the reality is that surgeons -- like any doctor -- can make serious mistakes that put others at risk.

There are many precautions that can be taken to help avoid such mix-ups. One such precaution is the use of patient wristbands that clearly identify the patient and the person's medical needs. However, even while using wristbands, doctors, nurses and medical staff can make a mistake. If these professionals do not properly check a wristband then an error can occur.

Additionally, some data has shown that wristbands don't always have all the correct information. Some issues with wristbands have included conflicting data, illegible data, erroneous information and more. Wristbands might also be missing data, or the band itself is missing. Without proper information, serious patient errors can occur. Constant reminders to medical staff to check a wristband have proved to be successful in reducing mistakes.

Modern technology has helped to increase the effectiveness of wristbands. Barcodes on the bands can make the information more secure and accurate. Patients themselves can also be an important part of preventing these types of errors.

There are many precautions that doctors and hospital staff should take to avoid surgical errors. However, even with precautions, these errors keep occurring. When Maryland residents are injured by careless physicians they need to protect their legal rights. An attorney can give people specific legal advice when they have been injured by a surgical mistake.
