Signs of a pulmonary embolism

There are many health crises that can be life-threatening for Maryland residents. When individuals are suffering from a medical crisis, they expect that their doctor will be able to diagnose and treat their problems. However, many doctors fail to identify common medical problems. Instead, individuals are left to suffer until a doctor realizes the person's mistake.

When it comes to certain medical issues, even a small delay can be life-threatening. When a delay or failure to diagnose results in a worsened medical condition, individuals may have the right to bring a lawsuit.

A pulmonary embolism is one of these life-threatening situations where doctors need to identify and treat the condition immediately. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that forms somewhere in the body and travels to a person's lung. In most cases, it blocks an artery in the lungs after forming in a vein. Most of these clots are formed in deep leg veins.

There are many symptoms that can be seen when a person develops a pulmonary embolism. These include a rapid heart rate, sweating, anxiety and fainting. A pulmonary embolism also results in shortness of breath and sharp chest pains. Many of the symptoms will become worse over time or become worse with deep breathing. Coughing up blood or mucus, heart palpitations and other signs of shock can also indicate that a person is suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

It is important for doctors to identify this immediately to avoid other damage. However, the failure to diagnose pulmonary embolism can occur since symptoms are so similar to pneumonia, heart attacks and asthma. Some doctors may even mistake a pulmonary embolism for a panic attack.

When doctors make mistakes in Maryland they need to be held accountable. Individuals can consult with an attorney to further understand their legal rights when medical malpractice has occurred.
