C-section rates still high across Maryland and U.S.

The birth of the baby can be a much anticipated event in the lives of a family in Maryland. People want the birth to go well for both the mother and the baby. However, complications arise all the time that require medical intervention when it comes to birth. The most common type of medical intervention is a Cesarean section. A C-section can be a safe and effective way to deliver an infant when an emergency arises. However, a C-section comes with many risks to both the child and the mother. Therefore, a C-section should be avoided when possible.

Recent studies show, however, that this is not always the case. Many hospitals across the United States are performing C-sections when a vaginal birth could have been performed. The United States Department of Health and Human Services has said that the nationwide C-section rate should be at or below 23.9 percent. However, it is much higher in many states across the nation including in Maryland. Specifically, in Maryland, the C-section rate is around 26 percent.

Reports have shown, that the reasons for the increased amount of C-sections often just depends on the atmosphere in the hospital that is chosen for the birth. Data shows that the C-section rate varies significantly between hospitals even when other factors are accounted taken into consideration. Women need to be educated about their birthing options and need to make sure that they are not forced into having an unnecessary C-section.

A C-section can lead to a variety of dangerous complications for both the mother and the baby. When birth injuries occur because of an unnecessary procedure, doctors and nurses may be held liable in a medical malpractice lawsuit. It is important for patients and their families to understand their legal rights when it comes to birth injuries. There may be a legal action that can be taken to compensate families for losses they suffered because of the negligence of a provider during a birth.
